September 23 Saturday

At 10:47 am got the train at Cedar Park with Dave, Diane and Ralph, went to Windsor Station. Diane left us, we went to Phantasmagoria (a record store), it was beautiful [and then it was. With old wood on the walls, stained glass in the windows, a fish tank and couches for two to curl up on (which we did). It closed in 1993]. Got 2 T-Rex records 'Unicorn' [released in May 1969] and 'Bolan Boogie' (72). Took pictures in Kresge, sat on the grass outside a church [the future Promenade de la Cathedral] and met Diane again. Dave did animal imitations [a frog for example, complete with hop]. At 2:45 met Danielle and Gillian outside Simpson's, went back to Phantas. Diane, Gill and I went to P.V.M., then Diane and Gill went to a record store [Cheap Thrills, a second hand store. Gillian had asked someone on the street "Do you know where I can find Cheap Thrills?"] and I met the rest outside the church. Diane and Gill came back and we all ate at A+W. Got the 5:50 train back (72a). nite-went to Ralph's, Dave there. Lesley and Brenda came, didn't do much, talked. Got a ride with Lesley at 11:30.

September 24 Sunday

Gillian came over, sat in the basement, then Ralph, watched the hockey game at times. Talked about the group, ate lemon meringue pie [and I think we phoned Chris, it was his 15th birthday].

September 25 Monday

Met Lesley, Judy and Don one year ago. History-Diane back in class [but not for long]. Lunch-had a candle in a chocolate bar for our year. Ralph, Diane, Dave, Andy, Lesley and I were there under the trees at the Civic Center. Threw acorns at each other. Before French Ralph and I met Chris in the hall, asked him why he wasn't coming down, he said "I turned off the whole thing". Math-drew on Andy's new running shoes. After school Ralph came down about 3:30, watched 'Star Trek', talked, did math. nite-met Lesley at 7:30 near St John's, we walked to Gillian's, sat in the study. Abby there, went to the livingroom. Got a ride with Lesley at 9:40.

September 26 Tuesday

Chem-Dave not there in A block. Lunch-Diane, Dave, Ralph, Andy and I sat under the trees at the Civic Center. Lesley came, put acorn tops in my eyes. Got let out of Math early to watch the hockey game, met Lesley and Diane in the student's lounge. Chris came up, he said he got an ounce [of marijuana?] free (u-huh). English-guy from guidance came in and talked about CEGEP and college. After school Ralph came over, Judy came. Watched 'Star Trek', talked about the Art Exhibition at Fairview [which I had the idea I might enter. I began a drawing of T-Rex]. Ralph dumped out the garbage can [on the floor I think]. The left at 6.

September 27 Wednesday

Chem-Dave not there. B(spare)-Andy and I went to the Civic Center, sat outside between the woods and the pool, then wandered around the school. History-in the aud, Parliament reform bills. Drew strange pictures at the back of Andy's note book. Diane sat beside me. Lunch-Andy, Dave, Diane, Ralph and I went outside under the trees at the Civic Center. Diane went in to get [her school] picture taken. We went to the Great hall, then outside at the front near St John's. Andy pushed Ralph into a bush. English-got out at 2:30 to get school picture taken, then Dave, Ralph and I talked out by my bus. Sue came, talked until 2:55.

72a. It may have been on this trip I first saw the famous Montreal “Lips Mural” at the corner of President Kennedy and Jeanne Mance.

(via Facebook – June 25, 2013) Montreal Gazette – June 8, 1985: “During the ‘60’s, the Bleury and Park Ave. strip around Sherbrooke St. was a haven for hippies. It spourted The Purple Unknown poster store, one of Montreal’s first “head” shops.

So it seemed appropriate that a few years later, a local wall (just one block east of Bleury) sprouted psychedelic smoke-breathing lips.

The decade of the wall mural began in 1971, boosted by a project called Cityscapes, backed by Benson & Hedges Ltd.

Cityscape yielded three murals, including one on the corner of Crescent St. and de Maisonneuve Blvd. And the public art-for-the-people movement flourished, subsidized by federal grants as well as by private enterprise.

By July 1976, 80 murals had been painted on walls all over town. This landmark has been with us since 1972, financed appropriately by a Local Initiatives Project (LIP) grant. It was created by artists Jacques Sabourin and Claude Dagenais.

72. Also saw the Bowie produced album by Lou Reed, "Transformer". I believe this album containted the song "Walk on the Wild Side", which at the time got AM airplay (mostly because programmers didn't understand some of the lyrics)...
