It was this night, or the one in October, after everyone had left, as I was coming down,, that I heard the song 'Echos' by Pink Floyd, playing on CHOM. It was the break in the middle of the song, when the high pitched tones begin, it scared the hell out of me...
Was this not also the era of the very strange commercial for 'O Henry' starring John Byner, The King of Candy Land...?....and there was at this time or later ads for a weight reducing salon where you were wrapped head to toe in bandages. There were later taken to court for false advertising...
I did see an Alka-Seltzer ad featuring Salvidor Dali. All I remember of it was a girl in a white body stocking against a black background. As the voiceover said "pain", Dali slashed her with a paintbrush. [Finally, in 2006 this ad shows up on the net. Though I had remembered the visual part quiet accurately, the vocal over actually says :"Then the Alka-Seltzer SHOOTS into the stomach!"...unless there is an alternative version?]
There was also an animated one, in which a man is attacked in bed by an army of pitchfork and knife carrying vegetables...also for Alka-Seltzer.
September 17 Sunday
At 12:30 Ralph came over, then Gillian. Watched TV, Lesley came and left with Gillian. Bored, went to the park, played chess, watched 'Jason King' [a silly British series about the adventures of a foppish spy, which must have been an inspiration for the movie "Austin Powers"]. Ralph left at 6:30.
September 18 Monday
Lunch-Lesley, Ralph, Dave and I sat under the trees at the Civic Center, Andy came. We went in and say in the student's lounge on the green carpet. French-they switched our French classes, now in Kafadarow's. Ralph is in it too. After school Ralph got the bus and came over, the phones were dead [the wire running to the house had snapped like a rubber band, hitting our garage and leaving a weaving black line on one of the doors] so we went to the Piddock's [the parent's of one of Karen's friend's Alison] and phoned the phone company. Did homework, watched 'Star Trek'.
September 19 Tuesday
Lunch-Dave, Ralph and I sat in the rink at the Civic Center. Math-Andy and I hit each other. After school Ralph, Dave and Andy came over. Watched 'Star Trek', Andy and Ralph had a 'fight' on the couches. They left at 5:40.
September 20 Wednesday
B(spare)-Christine, Dave and I went to the shops, got donuts, sat where the Salvation Army boxes are. Lunch-Lesley, Dave, Diane, Ralph and I went to the Civic Center outside the pool. Diane had her comb [Alphonse] in a bag. French-Calf away, had a ugly old bag!. Didn't do much, talked to Ralph. English-heard [Dave] Renwich [who I'd known since Grade 7] pulled a stiff in the showers in gym (ha!) [He became known as 'Hotrod Renwich']. Ralph, Lesley and I were talking by my bus and Chris walked by and said hi to us.
September 21 Thursday
B(spare)-went to the shops with Danielle, Dave and Christine. Bought donuts, sat in the same place as yesterday. Lunch-Ralph, Dave, Lesley and I went to the Civic Center under the trees. Andy came. It was warm for once. On the way to French passed Chris. He said hi to Ralph and I, I waved and Ralph insisted I did a peace sign (I didn't). English-have three girls (70) in the class now, one is Lora Kalio (71). After school Ralph came over, watched 'Star Trek'. Gillian came during it. Went downstairs, spanking Gillian [oh really]. They left at 6.
September 22 Friday
Chem-had an assembly welcoming us to the school. B(spare)-went to the shops with Dave and Christine, got donuts, sat in the same place as yesterday. Art-art history, told us what Renaissance was. Lunch-Dave, Christine, Ralph and I went to the Civic Center, sat outside the pool facing the Pits. Lesley came, then Andy. Dave bought some grass as I left. French-Ralph dropped his gum and we looked for it from our desks. Math-work. Got out 10 minutes early to watch the [Russia vs Canada] hockey game on TV in the Great Hall. nite-Gillian came over, then Andy and Ralph. Andy had grass, got stoned. Danielle came. Gillian and I were insulting each other, everyone seemed pissed off. They felt at 11.
70. It seems that at the beginning there were almost none, which would have suited Mr. Pound just fine. He always had a group of boy's desks crowded around his, holding court.
71. Ralph's note: Laura Kalio. Very large breasts. She showed up one day wearing a sweatshirt with an anchor on it. Several of us started up a chorus of "Anchors Aweigh"
