March 23 Thursday

I brought my camera to school. French- tried to get a picture of Tracy but the flash didn't go off. Mariline was wearing a see-through shirt (sin). Math- Todd was beating up a guy's geom case and he threw it and everything came out, Lang saw it and yelled at Chris "You shithead!" [first photo of Chris]. Gym(spare)- went to the library, sat with Ken, Finch, Cutfield and Murrphy, then Ken and I went to the History hall. Warren Johnson hit the camera by mistake and I dropped it.[first photo of Ralph in C block, and Janet in History]. Lunch- Janet, Christine and I went to the aud (Lesley didn't come, she's working on the annual). On the way there we stopped outside Woodworking, I pointed and laughed at Chris on the lath, he came to the door in a long apron, I said "I love your dress". Then the teacher closed the door. Sat up by the aud doors, Gail Astles, Norma and Dave there. Had a smoke, took pictures [first photos of Christine and Dave] and did more (not much) opera. English- Yacknin said anyone who knew about 'The Illustrated Man' could leave, so we did. Met Janet in the hall, then Dave. We went to the Civic Center rink, met Jennie Plugg at the food counter (she works there). Science- told [Scott] Pride to call Todd "shithead". Todd asked me if we smoked stuff (hash) today in the aud, I said yeah (we hadn't). After school went with Liz to see Sheila (visiting), then walked home with them. nite- Lesley, Don and I went to the school to see the play 'Right On, Left Off, Growing Up'. Met Judy there, sat in the balcony, Dave, Ralph, Danielle and Dave Hamson came too. I was stoned, someone in the middle of the play pulled the fire alarm (it wasn't real).

March 24 Friday

Sheila here [J.R.] today, in a green maxi. She and Liz stopped by my locker for asec. Gym(spare)- Sheila and I went to the library for asec to see Ken, then to the aud up by the doors and talked, then we stopped in at my English room to see Rea and Fenouhlet, sat outside the History room. Lunch- Christine and I went to the aud. Ralph, Dave, Janet, Gail Astles and Peggy ? there, then Liz and Sheila came, then Lesley. Christine took a picture of me, had a smoke. English- Yacknin said we didn't have to come, so Janet, Dave, Sheila, Liz and I went to the aud up by the doors. Kept telling Dave to shut up. Science-Chris was asking about the play last night. Sheila was on the bus with Liz. nite- walked to Lesley's, then Lesley, Don, Gillian and I got a drive with Diane Bouchard to the Forum, met Ralph, Dave, Janet and Danielle. Saw the groups 'Wild Turkey' and 'Black Sabbath' [Wild Turkey, fronted by Glenn Cormick, an ex-member of Jethro Tull, was better than expected. Black Sabbath was late and WT had to play a longer set. There was a long wait between the two acts]. A guy was freaking in front of us on four tabs of acid, later he slapped hands with me because I was English [he also asked for a knife so he could kill himself]. A girl from Lachine called Linda was talking to and passing joints to us [she had them under a bracelet up her sleeve]. She, Ralph and I [sitting on the floor between the seats] were stoned (Club of Stoned People). Black Sabbath wouldn't play an encore [in fact they played a very short set and left the stage. Then someone in a multicoloured suit said the drummer was sick and the show was over] so everyone booed and knocked over the seats on the ice. Outside someone broke the glass on the Forum doors. I got a piece [as did Ralph, who also took photos].

From the Gazette review by Bill Mann:

"...But because of the long first act, the long-suffering audience was treated to one of the finest bass solos they'll ever see. Turkey's Glenn Cornick, who formed the group after he split from Jethro Tull, played the tightest and most interesting bass solo I've ever witnessed. And Cornick must now rate among the finest in his craft, along with such as Jack Bruce and Noel Redding.

Ever heard anyone play blues bass? Well, that's what Cornick did, for at least 10 minutes, and it was incredible. The 13,000, or so present dug every moment of it...Turkey has a future. They are many times better than they sound on their flaccid album.

The headline group was another English outfit, Black Sabbath, a collective that has found a quick path to fame and, especially, fortune.

Here's their secret:

First, find a meaningless four-or-five bar chord progression.

Second, turn the volume knobs on bass and lead guitars up to their limit (about 115 decibels). And have at least 25 speakers behind you (they had 32).

Then use as much fuzz tone as possible. Finally, have the lead play the progression one octave higher than the bass - note for note - and there you have it, a cool million bucks apiece in 15 months. And Sabbath, whose music lends itself too well to the group's initials, always find a receptive (if somewhat pubescent) audience ready to dig every earsplitting moment of it..."
